Emergency Light Fixtures: The advance of technology.
Emergency light fixtures are common sights in modern industrial and residential buildings. Virtually all new building codes require them, and many old buildings are coded to have them retrofitted. That was not always the case. Emergency light fixtures used to be large, offer less light, and overall were to cumbersome for easy installation. Many of them used to be run by several lead acid batteries just to get a full 120 volt charge. In addition to their size and weight, emergency lights were quite expensive, so the only time they were installed was if the building owner deemed them necessary. The lighting they provided was incandescent, and they were largely an ineffective solution to power outages and emergencies.
That has all changed. The advances in technology have helped make emergency fixtures a safe and reliable form of emergency lighting. Batteries are no longer as cumbersome as they once had been, and their costs have dropped quite a bit as well. Many of them now use the powerful halogen bulbs that offer a much brighter and direct source of light than their incandescent and diffused counterparts.
