People always say to prepare for the worst, and that is certainly some good advice when considering emergency lighting fixtures. I know it is not pleasant to think about, but emergencies happen all the time. Some are the result of fire or flooding, and others are much larger scale disasters. I was in California for the last two major earthquakes. It was my first exposure to the realities of tectonic plate movement, and I cannot say that I enjoyed it. When you feel the earth move beneath your feet, you are reminded just how small you are in this world. I remember in particular the Northridge quake. It woke me up from a dead sleep. I was so frightened, I tried to run out the building without even bothering to grab my clothes. There were some emergency lighting fixtures that fortunately were unaffected by the quake. I was extremely grateful for the lighting source even though my neighbors could clearly see me in my pajamas. My father was not so fortunate. He was not harmed, but did get trapped on a freeway. He was on his way to southern California when the quake struck and the freeway he was on collapsed. He was not in the area where the freeway failed, but stuck without a way to get out. He had to stay there for two days before he found his way around. Those were events that I will never forget, but I will always be grateful for that emergency lighting.
