Looking for an exit.
In any American urban center, you can find an exit sign anywhere. There are freeway exit signs that direct the flow of traffic and gracefully relieve the freeway of its congestion. You can find them on the airplane, and should try to gain a little extra leg room by sitting in the emergency exit isle, you had better know how to open it! Whenever I go to work, I can find exit signs posted everywhere. There are signs that point the way to the main hallway, signs that direct you away from the elevator in case of an emergency, and signs that are for emergency use only. I have always been tempted to open those doors, but I am afraid that I would set off an alarm. I wonder why I can’t find an exit sign for other parts of my life. I would like a sign clearly directing me away from my office desk and towards my humble dwelling. I would have liked an exit sign in all those classrooms during finals week. Better yet, I would like to find an exit sign during an argument with my wife, that is, of course, if I am clearly in the wrong. But life does not work that way. Too bad. I could sure use another exit sign.
