Bright Lights and Big Cities

Emergency lighting regulations can and do vary widely, from major city to city. For example, Chicago, and Los Angeles, and New York each require specific emergency lights approved for the city. Because of the wide variations in environmental conditions, one constant challenge is to match emergency lighting with necessary national standards.

Costs of manufacturing are a critical consideration. One method of making sure emergency lighting manufacturing meets minimal standards is through effective legislative education. One important partner in these efforts is the National Electrical Manufacturers Association. The range of alphabet-soup federal agencies can be staggering for a single manufacturer…OSHA and ADA requirements have become especially important considerations. With energy awareness becoming a key factor, EPA standards are increasingly playing a part in helping the market match manufacture.

But cities are increasingly expected to become more complicated in emergency lighting requirements, as well. Though building codes are becoming increasingly standardized, the ability to enforce codes in renovations remain a concern in major cities. The other emerging call is for safety standards that exceed emergency lighting standards. This would make building codes a minimum standard.

The test would be for emerging technologies to be adopted voluntarily. “Smart” technology, including the newest LED systems, are now entering the market. The range of new technologies and techniques will be, at the least, a bright idea whose time is coming.

Safety and security at the flick of a button

bulb42.jpgAn auxiliary power supply has become an inherent feature of every new building being constructed. Not only does this ensure timely back up of power, it is a good way of preserving important data. At times this kind of power is also not reliable as the battery’s life might run out unexpectedly. This is why most computer companies and hospitals choose to opt for the high tech emergency light fixtures. This comes in handy when certain machines have to be running round the clock and by taking such precautionary measures of installing one of these fixtures, any unforeseen contingencies can be avoided.

Many options are available while buying an emergency light fixture. It largely depends on the existing power system and size of the place. All of those available in the market can be easily installed and operated by anyone. The batteries are no longer cumbersome and these days, halogen bulbs are used to increase efficiency and brightness. Periodical maintenance and checking of the fixtures will ensure it works well for years to come. Make sure to clean the unit and lenses to enjoy maximum benefit. It’s also important to place these lights in easily accessible locations around the building.

Prevention and be safety

bulb31.jpgThese days while a building is in the construction stage itself people have begun installing emergency light fixtures and providing the necessary provision for the same. One of the conventional methods of ensuring back up of power is to install a stand by inverter which will come alive once the main power shuts down ensuring continuous flow of power. But this is not very reliable as the hours it can run are very limited, beyond which it needs adequate time to recharge. Meaning, you could be in the dark for hours together, in which case these emergency lights will come in handy. Not only do these ensure comfortable living but also protects the building and its occupants from security breaches.

In cities filled with skyscrapers and public service offices, along with fire extinguisher they make sure to install one of these state of the art emergency light fixtures and fittings. This helps them in providing consistent service at all times. In most public utility buildings, the exit signs are all fitted with these fittings to allow people to find their way out incase of an emergency. These lights are typically in bright red colour and lit up during functioning hours.

Old vs. modern

bulb21.jpgThere are many options available that one can use in case the electricity shuts down. Some produce more light than the others and some are expensive unlike their competitive cheaper ones. It is therefore essential to go in for reliable sturdy emergency lighting so that you don’t incur further costs getting it fixed and making it work. The kind of lighting you choose depends entirely on necessity and frequency of power failures. It could be the candle or even a torch, but make sure to keep them easily accessible, and ready for use. Periodical maintenance is very important plus they need to be used on and off or else they might not work when the need arises. Any form of lighting for that matter needs to be cleaned for it to be effective and placed in a spot where it illuminates the whole area focused upon.

Some of the emergency lighting models available have built in radio in them, for you to enjoy music while you spend those hours without power. Most of the portable lights have different modes, SOS mode, or sleep timer which is to switch off the lights after a period of time making it last long.

This lighting system is completely self sufficient and requires no maintenance other than the battery check up every six months.

Some of the kinds of LED lights come in small portable sizes with SOS mode and night vision making them ideal companions while traveling or camping. These run on battery power and their life is reasonably long compared to the torch lights. Once charged for 24hrs, these provide uninterrupted power for nearly 6-8 hours. These operate on 6volt rechargeable batteries making it easy to operate. Make sure your emergency light fixtures are up to code.

It’s Dark in here!

emergency-lighting.jpgThe office building where I work is open twenty four hours a day, but my particular office is the only one that operates during the night. The rest of the building is shut down and locked up. The elevator is turned off, and all the lights in the building are extinguished. This makes for some hazardous conditions. When I exit my office, it leads directly into a helicopter hanger bay. It is filled with about fifteen to twenty helicopters as well as toolboxes, desks, air compressors, and just about everything else you can imagine. When I walk into the hanger bay at night, it is very dark, and I have to be careful that I do not run into something. There is not even any emergency lighting. I am uncertain if the building has a backup power source, but I am a little concerned about the lack of safety features. I have not worked during the night for some time, so I had forgotten about the lack of emergency lighting. The only lights I could see were on the landing pad, and they were the lights used to guide in inbound helicopters. Hopefully my fears will not come to fruition, but I certainly hope that management will decide to install some lighting soon.
