In some parts of the world, the government lays down laws and specifications regarding how tall a building can be and what kind of amenities are allowed. Similarly such laws are also applicable to the back up lighting system and Exit signs that need to be installed in these buildings. The most approved models are the thin edged signs, which will remain lit twenty four hours of the day around the year. These have been approved after much testing and are found to be the most reliable and durable ones. Being single faced with lighting in either red or green depending on the regulations, these are suspended from the ceiling at the appropriate height for maximum effect.
This model of Exit Signs comes in multiple bright colors and fitted with replaceable battery that can be fitted in once the light starts losing its effect. Another advantage of these signs is that they are self contained and come with direction indicators, which are also lit up. With energy consumption at an all time low of just 3 volts these lights are pleasing on the eye and serve the purpose of guiding people to a place of safety away from the building.

Visibility is the main purpose of the Exit Signs that get installed in big buildings and shopping malls. Once any sign of emergency or danger is senses, the aim of all the people inside the building will be to get out and get out alive. In order to cater to this need, the signs and lights are placed across every floor in multiple locations directing people towards the outside. But, not all lights are effective, there are some, which will get shrouded during fire or smoke and thereby don’t serve the purpose at all. So, the sign should be made of a metal or plastic that is heat proof and will not lose its visibility factor ever. Companies have now started developing signs with LED bulbs and fluorescent lights, which give out bright light at all, times and last much longer than others.
While purchasing Exit Signs one must keep in mind, its size, durability and life span for these will in turn determine its effectiveness. The lights should be visible from down the corridor and must adhere to the safety norms of the building. Since these lights require no additional hardware, they are very easy to install and use.

In a building, there are many sign boards giving directions, displaying a list of what is located where and all these are for people to understand and follow. Amongst these we find the entrance and exit door locations to help people make their way to a place of safety in case of any emergency. Along the path that leads to the exit door one find multiple Exit Signs with arrows pointing towards the door enabling people to just blindly follow this. Some of these boards could be in the form of a rectangular box; others would simply be a metal sheet with the text and arrows or a pictogram on one side or on both sides.
Since the Exit Signs are made using metal or fiber glass, the material is sturdy and lasts for a good ten years at least. It is also shock and fire resistant and will be clearly visible across long distances. Incase the board has light bulbs within it; they will be of the replaceable variety and can be removed and changed once the lights starts fading out. There are also LED lights, which are cost effective and light emitted is more powerful than regular bulbs.

These days while a building is in the construction stage itself people have begun installing emergency light fixtures and providing the necessary provision for the same. One of the conventional methods of ensuring back up of power is to install a stand by inverter which will come alive once the main power shuts down ensuring continuous flow of power. But this is not very reliable as the hours it can run are very limited, beyond which it needs adequate time to recharge. Meaning, you could be in the dark for hours together, in which case these emergency lights will come in handy. Not only do these ensure comfortable living but also protects the building and its occupants from security breaches.
In cities filled with skyscrapers and public service offices, along with fire extinguisher they make sure to install one of these state of the art emergency light fixtures and fittings. This helps them in providing consistent service at all times. In most public utility buildings, the exit signs are all fitted with these fittings to allow people to find their way out incase of an emergency. These lights are typically in bright red colour and lit up during functioning hours.

Every building has in it a dozen or so emergency light fixtures to be able to provide lighting across the space. The exit signs placed above all the entrances is one fitting that needs to be visible and on all the time, for it shows people the way out. It also gives them a sense of comfort, knowing where they are, instead of searching in the dark for that mobile phone or a candle. Typically, these exit signs are accompanied by arrows pointing towards the way out of a room or building. If in case of a bank or shopping mall, these fittings are usually covered in mesh wiring to protect it from damage and from any sort of vandalism.

Not a moment is lost when power fails, these lights turn on instantly and run for couple of hours before their batteries need charging.
There are different kinds of emergency light fixtures available in the market. From those with single bulb to those that are fitted with fourteen bulbs, which ensures the life of the light is extended. Only one bulb comes on and the second one lights up only after the first one is ready to die. This is highly suited for large buildings or in areas where power is a problem. In addition to conserving power, this extends the life of the light.

The emergency lighting fixture is not designed to look attractive. It is not made and used for its artistic value. They serve a very specific purpose and are designed with function in mind rather than form. The question is where to place an emergency lighting fixture. First of all, the lighting fixture should be placed high enough so that it is not easily disturbed. The lighting fixture should not, however, be placed so high as to create problems for maintenance personnel. There should be a good balance between the two so the lighting fixture is not easily disturbed, yet accessible enough that maintenance personnel can perform the required services. They should also be placed in areas that do not receive natural light. Light can not bend, so if a room is situated at a ninety degree angle to an adjacent room, it will not receive any light from the outside. There should be enough lights placed so that the entire room remains sufficiently lit. Remember, these lights are specifically used in the case of an emergency, so their function is to guide people to the proper exits. The more lights you use to safeguard you building, the better. Remember these tips the next time consider your companies safety requirements.

Maintaining your emergency lighting system can be costly and time consuming. Many states require that emergency lights are tested for their battery supply and functionality on a regular basis. This equates to thousands of dollars spent on man hours that could be better spent elsewhere. Fortunately, there are products that address this issue. Some companies offer systems that allow a single user to monitor an entire buildings system of emergency lighting from one remote location. These systems initially cost more than manual labor, but they end up paying off in the long run. There is also another benefit to consider. For manually serviced lighting systems, there is a natural lapse of time between maintenance services. During this period, it is feasible that something could happen to make the lighting system inoperative. This is to the determent of the buildings safety. A lighting fixture could break or a battery or other power supply could fail. Those scenarios would be avoided if a user were able to monitor the status of the emergency lighting system remotely. The status of the fixtures would be continuously available and would only take a short period to scan and diagnose. Because of this, purchasing a remote viewing station may pay off immediate dividends.

On August 23rd 2005, hurricane Katrina was moving over Florida and into the Gulf of Mexico where it would rapidly gain energy and devastate the states of the Gulf Coast. Everyone in the country knows what came about because of that storm. Much of the area remains in ruin to this day. The need for emergency lighting fixtures in light of that event may seem blatantly obvious, but unfortunately, many people did not have the luxury of emergency lighting fixtures. Of course, not all emergencies could compare to the magnitude of Katrina, but the need for emergency lighting fixtures is none the less important. Emergency lighting is critical for homes and businesses alike and especially for those prone to natural disasters. The United States has some of the most beautiful land in the world, yet it seems that many areas of the country are vulnerable to some sort of threat. From the west coast where the Pacific Ring of Fire extends, to the states of the Midwest where tornados regularly devastate, the U.S. is constantly under the threat of natural disasters. Emergency lighting, therefore, is absolutely essential for every household or business. Your family of employees will need proper lighting in the case of an emergency, and will be grateful to know that they are cared for.
